Ventura County Parks on the Air (POTA) Locations

Parks on the Air started in 2016 as a special event of the ARRL has been continued by a group of volunteers since shortly after the event ended in 2017.  As an amateur "ham" radio operator myself (KI6BTY), who is new to POTA in 2022, I'm quite happy that this event is ongoing.

If you are interested in operating your ham radio rig during your vacation, Ventura County has several POTA sites that are within a 5-15 minute drive of our homes.  It's also real easy to operate from our backyards, and "The Resort" even hosted a local ham radio group, "The Bored Net", recently for a Micro Field Day.  Our band conditions are rather good right now.  In the early morning (7am, 8am) I can often get Europe on 10m.  Asia and Australia are pretty easy to work all day from 10m-30m as is Central and South America.

Ventura County has several POTA sites, from the beaches of Ventura and Malibu, to the trails of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, and the Santa Monica Mountains.  There are some locations where you can activate multiple parks at once!  The Santa Monica Mountain National Recreational Area is a huge area that stretches on the map below from the "NAS Point Mugu" in the west to the 405 freeway in the east, from the coast of Malibu in the south to the middle of the San Fernando Valley.

Below are maps of the POTA sites as well as trailheads within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, as well as a list of the POTA locations.

For those who are interested in the Summits On The Air ("SOTA") program or the World Wide Flora and Fauna ("WWFF") program, Ventura County has several locations, including our regional Wildwood Park, that count towards those programs.  More on that in a future posting.
